Installing a pool is not something you do every day so it is exciting. The logistics of a pool build extend further than the size and colour. The build needs to meet pool safety and planning laws as mentioned above. Here is some information below if you are interested in learning more about this.

Knowing the Safety and Planning Laws for Gisborne

In New Zealand, there are pool planning and safety laws in place. These can vary though depending on where you live in the country. This is what you should know about Gisborne’s regulations.

You need to have a building consent when building a new pool here in Gisborne for both the pool itself and the pool fencing. Both of these require an application outlining the specifics of the pool construction and the fencing to be approved.

Once your pool has been built, your pool fencing will be routinely inspected every 3 years by a Gisborne District Council inspector or you can choose to hire someone externally to complete the inspection instead. They need to be an independent qualified pool inspector (IQPI).

Your pool needs to have a backflow prevention device (vacuum breaker) installed to ensure that pool water doesn’t siphon into the drinking water supply when the pool is emptied or topped up. This needs to be installed regardless of whether you are on city water or tank.

You are responsible for ensuring that your pool barrier is in good working order. If it ever sustains damage, you need to get it repaired ASAP. Additionally, the pool gate should never be propped open and nothing that can be used to climb on should be placed around the pool fencing, even temporarily.

You can read more about the pool safety and planning laws for Gisborne here at the Gisborne District Council website: Swimming pool safety barriers | Gisborne District Council (

Which fibreglass pool is best suited to me in Gisborne?

Finding a pool that complements your home and lifestyle is key to finding the right pool for you. The more it suits your specific needs, the more you’ll use it, so rather than just choosing the pool you like the look of best, it’s better to choose a pool that meets your swimming requirements. An example of this would be that you love the look of small compact pools ideal for 2-3 people max however, you have a large family and this sized pool simply won’t suffice or be practical. Some things you can consider when working out your choices would be:

  1. How much you can afford to spend on a pool. Including the pool, paving choices, fencing and landscaping, if any. Remember that it’s better to spend the extra on the permanent fixtures, things such as landscaping can be added later or gradually.

  2. Where your pool can go and the most functional location for it. You don’t want your pool to engross your backyard or disrupt the flow of the space you have to work with. It should complement and enhance the space, not detract from it.

  3. What you and your family will mostly use the pool for. For example, laps, fitness, relaxation etc.

Can I use my pool all year round with Gisborne's weather?

Gisborne has a warm and temperate climate for most of the year but the same cannot be said about wintertime. This time of year means that the pool will often go unused. If you’d like to have the flexibility of using your pool whenever your heart desires regardless of the weather outside, you may find installing a heating system is beneficial. Even as the weather starts to transition from cool to warm, it can still be too cold for swimming in the afternoons as the temperature drops. You may be thinking that pool heating is a luxury inclusion that will cost a motza, but with options such as solar, this simply isn’t the truth. Once you have covered the installation cost, it practically costs you nothing to run.

Our team here at Fibreglass Pools Gisborne are locals ourselves and we love everything pool related, including building spectacular pools that will be used and treasured for many decades to come.
