Installing a pool is a large construction project and you need to be sure you are adhering to local pool safety and planning laws. Here are some of what’s behind a pool build logistics-wise:
Knowing the Safety and Planning Laws for Upper Hutt
All new pool builds here in Upper Hutt require a building consent as outlined under the Building Act.
Once your pool is built, it must have a pool fence around it, and it must meet pool fencing requirements as outlined in the Act.
You will need to have your pool fencing inspected every 3 years. The first inspection is free, and then you are responsible for funding the fee associated with subsequent inspections. You can either have your pool fencing inspected by an inspector at Upper Hutt Council or alternatively, you can elect for an independent qualified pool inspector (IQPI) to do it instead. You will be notified when your pool fencing inspections are due via post from Upper Hutt City Council.
Your new pool must have a backflow preventer installed to stop your pool from contaminating the town’s water supply.

Which fibreglass pool is best suited to me in Upper Hutt?
To ensure you get the most use possible out of your pool, it’s important that you choose the right one. Everyone has different reasons for wanting a pool for their home, so everyone’s choice will be different as a result. While our team are masters at pairing pools with people and their specific needs, here are some things for you to take into consideration in the meantime:
How do you want the space to feel when it’s done? Which colour, shape and style would complement the area and your home? The surroundings of the pool are equally as important as the pool itself. Think of greenery choices for around the pool, if any, whether you want to have enough room for a lounger or two, your paving choice and which one will work best with the colour of your pool and home.
The layout of your backyard and where the best location for the pool would be. You want your backyard to have flow and if possible, additional elements other than just a pool itself.
Who will be using the pool and what will they likely use the pool for most? Establishing this is key to nailing down your final design. It can help you to work out what type of pool to get for starters, but also to work out what extras you may want to add such as jets, water features, lighting etc.
Your budget. It’s important to know upfront how much you are willing to spend on a pool because this will allow you to figure out what kind of pools, fencing and hardscaping options are within your price range.
Can I use my pool all year round with Upper Hutt's weather?
Upper Hutt experiences a pleasant climate for the most part with winter being the exception. Unless you like submerging in cold water or swimming in it, it’s unlikely that you’ll use your pool much during this time. Rather than wasting it, it’s smart to consider a pool heating system. They enable pool owners to warm their pool up considerably and as a result, use their pool for many more months of the year than you likely would without one. Pool heating is handy to have even in the warmer months, as the day comes into to evening, you can turn your heating on to warm the water without having to get out because it’s too cold.
There are several options all varying in heating capabilities and price points. If this is something you’d like for your new swimming pool, mention it to our team and they’ll be able to go into more detail to give you a better understanding of what they are, how much they cost and how they work.
